Barcelona Pavilion

Although there is a plethora of wonderful buildigs in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe's German Pavilion of the 1929 International Exhibition is my favourite. Classic modernity and simple yet extravagant beauty - the building spreads a stylish coolness that in my opinion epitomizes the air of the 1920s.

Obwohl es eine Unmenge von schönen Gebäuden in Barcelona gibt, ist Mies van der Rohes Deutscher Pavillon der Weltausstellung von 1929 mein Favorit. Klassische Modernität und einfache, aber dennoch extravagante Schönheit - das Gebäude versprüht eine stilvolle Coolness, die meiner Meinung nach das Flair der 1920er Jahre verkörpert.

Fabian

Fabian - The Story of a Moralis by the German author Erich Kästner is one of my favourite books. The novel is set in the Berlin of the early 1930s. Jakob Fabian, unemployed advertiser, is roaming the city and studying life: boarding rooms, bars, certain ladies and respective establishments, jobless people, love and the mendacity of mankind. In the turbid stream of opportunism and inhumanity, the moralist perishes - and with him the ideals of the Weimar Republic. A brilliant and provocative urban satire which gives a splendid insight into the spirit of an dying era.

Fabian - Geschichte eines Moralisten von Erich Kästner ist eines meiner Lieblingsbücher. Der Roman spielt im Berlin der frühen 1930er Jahre. Jakob Fabian, Reklamefachmann ohne Anstellung, durchstreift die Stadt und studiert das Leben: möblierte Zimmer, Bars, gewisse Damen und dazugehörige Etablissements, Arbeitslose, die Liebe und die Verlogenheit der Menschheit. Im trüben Strom von Opportunismus und Unmenschlichkeit geht der Moralist unter - und mit ihm die Ideale der Weimarer Republik. Eine brillante und provokante Großstadtsatire, die einen hervorragenden Einblick in den Geist einer sterbenden Ära gibt.

C'est la Mort

No, this is not a vintage poster from the 1920s - it's a flyer from the Seattle band C'est la Mort. I do not know where these guys always get such beautiful images, but I love them. There's good music (although maybe not everybody's cup of tea) and some extremly nice people in the band, too! They play in the Seattle area quite often - if only Washington state wouldn't be so far away from my home...

Nein, dies ist kein Originalposter aus den 1920ern - es ist ein Flyer von der Band C'est la Mort aus Seattle. Ich weiß nicht, wo die Leute immer so schöne Bilder herkriegen, aber ich liebe sie. Es gibt auch gute Musik (wenn auch vielleicht nicht jedermanns Sache) und einige äußerst nette Leute in der Band! Sie spielen recht oft in und um Seattle  - wenn Washington nur nicht so weit von Zuhause entfernt wäre...

El Ferrocarril de Sóller

On April 14th 1912 - the day the Titanic sank - the 27 km long railway line from Palma de Mallorca to Sóller was opened. On July 14th 1929 it was electrified. Today the line is still run with rumbling carriages and cars originating from the early 20th century - less as a modern means of mass transportation but more as tourist attraction. Nevertheless a still stylish way to cross the island which is quite an experience!

Am 14. April 1912 - dem Tag, als die Titanic sank - wurde die 27 km lange Bahnstrecke von Palma de Mallorca nach Sóller eröffnet. Am 14. Juli 1929 wurde sie elektrifiziert. Auch heute noch wird die Strecke mit rumpelnden Originalwaggons und -triebwagen aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert befahren - weniger als modernes Massentransportmittel, sondern vielmehr als Touristenattraktion. Trotzdem eine immer noch stilvolle und erlebenswerte Art, die Insel zu durchqueren!

Easy Virtue

"The twenties have roared... the thirties have yet to swing" - this tagline was enough to lure me into the (kindly air conditioned) cinema despite the current tropical temperatures. Splendid actors, great setting, witty dialogues and a non-Hollywood but nevertheless somewhow happy ending - an enjoyable film!

"Die 'Roaring Twenties' sind vorbei… die 'Swinging Thirties' haben noch nicht begonnen" - diese Kurzbeschreibung reichte, um mich trotz gegenwärtiger tropischer Temperaturen ins (angenehm klimatisierte) Kino zu locken. Glänzende Darsteller, tolle Ausstattung, witzige Dialoge und ein nicht-hollywoodmäßiges Happy End, das trotzdem irgendwie happy war - ein unterhaltsamer Film!
