Another One

After Dodo I came with Sem across another artist I had never heard of before and who drew beautiful pictures. Interestingly enough he also put a greyhound aside a lady to visualize style. Stunning!

Nach Dodo stieß ich mit Sem auf einen weiteren Künstler von dem ich noch nie vorher gehört hatte und der wunderschöne Bilder zeichnete. Interessanterweise setzte er ebenfalls einer Dame einen Windhund an die Seite um Stil darzustellen. Toll!

Living in the Past

Imagine as a kid you see a TV-show in which 15 people live for 16 weeks in an old estate house like people used to live back in 1900. This impresses you so much that, as an adult, you live in the past. This guy is living his dream that way - amazing and impressing!

Stellt euch vor, ihr seht als Kind eine TV-Sendung, in der 15 Menschen 16 Wochen lang in einem alten Gutshaus so leben wie die Menschen um 1900. Das beeindruckt euch so sehr, dass ihr als Erwachsener in der Vergangenheit lebt. Dieser Mann lebt so seinen Traum - erstaunlich und beeindruckend!

Silhouettes

Gustav Klimt is without doubt the most distinguished Art Noveau artist. Works like The Kiss oder the Beethoven Frieze are world famous. By chance I found these two Silhouettes in the web which were unknown to me so far. They air such a cool elegance that to me they epitomize the era of Art Noveau

Gustav Klimt ist zweifellos der bedeudetendste Künstler des Jugendstils. Werke wie Der Kuss oder der Beethovenfries sind weltbekannt. Durch Zufall fand ich im Netz diese beiden Silhouetten, die mir bislang leider unbekannt waren. Sie strahlen eine so kühle Eleganz aus, dass sie für mich die Epoche des Jugendstils verkörpern.

El Ferrocarril de Sóller

On April 14th 1912 - the day the Titanic sank - the 27 km long railway line from Palma de Mallorca to Sóller was opened. On July 14th 1929 it was electrified. Today the line is still run with rumbling carriages and cars originating from the early 20th century - less as a modern means of mass transportation but more as tourist attraction. Nevertheless a still stylish way to cross the island which is quite an experience!

Am 14. April 1912 - dem Tag, als die Titanic sank - wurde die 27 km lange Bahnstrecke von Palma de Mallorca nach Sóller eröffnet. Am 14. Juli 1929 wurde sie elektrifiziert. Auch heute noch wird die Strecke mit rumpelnden Originalwaggons und -triebwagen aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert befahren - weniger als modernes Massentransportmittel, sondern vielmehr als Touristenattraktion. Trotzdem eine immer noch stilvolle und erlebenswerte Art, die Insel zu durchqueren!

The Birth of Art Déco

I had never heard of George Barbier before I accidentally came across a postcard with this motive when I passed by a shop. What a wonderful artist, what beautiful images, what a discovery! I'm a fan now...

Ich hatte noch nie vorher von George Barbier gehört, bevor ich zufällig im Vorbeigehen in einem Laden auf eine Postkarte mit diesem Motiv stieß. Was für ein wunderbarer Künstler, was für wunderschöne Bilder, was für eine Entdeckung! Ich bin jetzt ein Fan...

Portrait of a Lady

I came across this portrait in the wonderful two volume work Fashion from Taschen Books. It shows Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867–1944), and his wife, Edith Minturn Stokes (1867–1937). I was captured immediatley by the lady's smile, her glance, her posture, her entire appearance. She seems so vivid, self-assured and likeable - I would have loved to meet her in person.
Unfortunately, not much can be found about Ms. Minturn Stokes in the web (apart from this portrait). She married her husband in 1895 and according to a report in the New York Times it was a rather plain wedding with a bride "widely known for her beauty".
The slightly grim but also good looking groom, eldest son of multimillionaire Anson Phelps Stokes, worked as an architect and is the author of The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, which seems to be an impressing work.
What a stylish couple!

Ich stolperte über dieses Porträt im wunderbaren zweibändigen Werk Fashion aus dem Taschen-Verlag. Es zeigt Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867–1944) und seine Frau Edith Minturn Stokes (1867–1937). Ich war sofort von der Dame gefangen, von ihrem Lächeln, ihrem Blick, ihrer Haltung, ihrer gesamten Erscheinung. Sie wirkt so lebhaft, selbstsicher und sympathisch - ich hätte sie gerne mal persönlich getroffen.

Leider kann man im Netz nicht viel über Ms. Minturn Stokes finden (von diesem Porträt abgesehen). Sie heiratete ihren Ehemann 1895, und einem Bericht in der New York Times zufolge war es eine eher schlichte Hochzeit mit einer Braut, die "für ihre Schönheit weit bekannt" war.

Der etwas grimmig, aber ebenfalls gutaussehende Ehemann, ältester Sohn des Multimillionärs Anson Phelps Stokes, arbeitete als Architekt und ist der Autor von Die Ikonographie der Insel Manhattan, 1498-1909, was ein beeindruckendes Werk zu sein scheint.

Was für ein stilvolles Paar!
