Where there's smoke there's fire

Yes, I know, smoking is not cool - it is lethal, addictive, stinks etc. But look at this picture - if this ain't cool I don't know what coolness is... It's a masterpiece by Russel Patterson whom I did not know so far. His works are so beautiful there's even an entire blog solely about them!

Ja ich weiß, rauchen ist nicht cool - es kann töten, macht abhängig, stinkt etc. Aber schaut euch dieses Bild an - wenn das nicht cool ist weiß ich nicht, was Coolness ist... Es ist ein Meisterwerk von Russel Patterson, den ich bislang nicht kannte. Seine Werke sind so schön - es gibt sogar einen Blog mit nichts Anderem!

Gustav Klimt is without doubt the most distinguished Art Noveau artist. Works like The Kiss oder the Beethoven Frieze are world famous. By chance I found these two Silhouettes in the web which were unknown to me so far. They air such a cool elegance that to me they epitomize the era of Art Noveau

Gustav Klimt ist zweifellos der bedeudetendste Künstler des Jugendstils. Werke wie Der Kuss oder der Beethovenfries sind weltbekannt. Durch Zufall fand ich im Netz diese beiden Silhouetten, die mir bislang leider unbekannt waren. Sie strahlen eine so kühle Eleganz aus, dass sie für mich die Epoche des Jugendstils verkörpern.

Visiting a Friend in the Mountains

I had already heard that wall stickers are really hip now and found the trend - well, a trend...
But that was before I knew the beautiful murals from Surface View. Above all, I am taken by the pictured one, an extract from ancient Chinese wall hanging dating back to the Ming Dynasty. But there are many more great motives. Gorgeous!

Ich hatte schon davon gehört, dass Wandsticker jetzt voll angesagt sein sollen und fand den Trend - nun ja, ein Trend eben...
Da kannte ich aber noch nicht die wunderschönen Wandbilder von Surface View. Vor allem das hier gezeigte, der Ausschnitt eines chinesischen Wandbehangs aus der Ming-Dynastie, hat es mir angetan. Aber es gibt noch viele weitere tolle Motive. Traumhaft!

England's Pleasant Pastures

These lines came to my mind when I visited the Cotswolds three weeks ago (unexpectedly). I had often heard that this region is supposed to be one of the most beautiful of England but would never have thought how true this is! This post is therefore dedicated to the beauty of nature and the timeless buildings that add to the impressing overall picture.

An diese Zeilen musste ich denken, als ich vor drei Wochen die Cotswolds (unerwartet) besuchte. Ich hatte schon oft gehört, das diese Gegend eine der schönsten England sein soll, hätte aber nie gedahct, wie wahr das ist! Diesen Eintrag widme ist daher der Schönheit der Natur und der zeitlosen Gebäude, die zum beeindruckenden Gesamteindruck beitragen.

Jeves and Wooster

The humour of the ITV series Jeeves and Wooster may not be everybody's cup ot tea - even I as a fan find it sometimes a little bit too slapstick. Or as the British Sitcom Guide puts it:

"The third and fourth series exhibit a marked decline in quality, with frequent descents into the cartoonish. However, the Wodehousian plots and the interplay between Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry still manage to keep the program from sinking utterly into mediocrity. Compared to the heights of the first two series, series three and four are fairly poor efforts, but they still shine compared to most of what's on television."

The most remarkable thing is the decor, though. The show is set in the 1930s, and the costumes, the buildings, the furniture - everything looks totally contemporary. Art déco at its best, which is already visible in the beautiful opening credits.
I wish I could be as impeccably dressed as Bertie Wooster every day - but I suppose you need to have a valet like Jeeves for that...

Der Humor der ITV-Serie Jeeves and Wooster mag nicht jedermanns Sache sein - sogar ich als Fan finde ihn manchmal zu klamaukig. Oder wie der British Sitcom Guide es beschreibt:

"Die dritte und vierte Staffel weisen einen merklichen Qualitätsabfall auf, mit regelmäßigem Absinken ins Cartoon-hafte. Aber die Geschichten von Wodehouse und das Zusammenspiel von Hugh Laurie und Stephen Fry bewahren das Programm davor, in die äußerste Mittelmäßigkeit zu versinken. Im Vergleich zu den Höhen der ersten Beiden sind die dritte und vierte Staffel von dürftiger Qualität, aber im Vergleich zu dem, was sonst noch im Fernsehen läuft, glänzen sie dennoch."

Das bemerkenswerteste dabei ist allerdings die Austattung. Die Serie spielt in den 1930ern, und die Kostüme, die Gebäude, die Möbel - alles sieht absolut zeitgemäß aus. Art Déco in Reinkultur, was man bereits im wunderschönen Vorspann sehen kann.
Ich wünschte, ich könnte jeden Tag so makellos gekleidet sein wie Bertie Wooster - aber dafür braucht man wohl einen Kammerdiener wie Jeeves...
